I have long been fascinated by the contrasts of sunflowers. Once the seed has germinated, they seem to go up like a rocket, bursting into this wonderful brilliant golden disc. They follow the path of the sun (hence girasoleand tournesol), but then, just as quickly, their heads droop and they decline into a kind of rapid old age. The poet William Blake sums up this progress from youth to age:

Ah Sun-flower! weary of time,
Who countest the steps of the Sun:
Seeking after that sweet golden clime
Where the travellers journey is done.

Where the Youth pined away with desire,
And the pale Virgin shrouded in snow:
Arise from their graves and aspire,
Where my Sun-flower wishes to go.

These images depict stages in this decline
