In the same essay Clive James wrote, 'The decay of grammar is a feature of our time...' A lot of grumpy old men have made similar complaints. The problem is that they don't agree on what is meant by 'grammar'.
In The Oxford A–Z of Grammar and Punctuation and Grammar for Teachers I give a simple, clear, and accurate account of modern descriptive grammar. I deal with the myths about what grammar is (all that stuff about split infinitives) and replace them with a comprehensible explanation of how grammar works. The Oxford A–Z is rarely out of the top 500 books on Amazon UK, which suggests that this approach works well for many readers.
